Changing Your Thinking

I found the section on Santiago Roman y Cajal’s story, and the power of changing your thoughts especially compelling.

By using Santiago Ramon y Cajal as an example, Barbara Oakley teaches that we have the power to change our brain by altering how we think.

Cajal himself stressed the importance of perseverance. In addition, being flexible in your thinking and willing to admit errors can allow you to be a better learner.

It is also vital that to be responsible for your own learning. It is important not to let negative feedback deter you from completing your goals. Everyone will face criticism at some point, and while at times it can be helpful, do not let it make you feel discouraged.

Take pride in your accomplishments, and know that you have the ability to learn difficult concepts even though others may doubt you before you even begin. Barbara Oakley is great example of someone who “broadened her passions” and her journey may not have been easy, but she persevered. Now she is a Professor of Engineering, and able to teach students tools they can use to be successful.

Caroline Mitchell’s video also showed us that we can pursue careers in fields that may not seem like a natural choice. If something interests you, do not be afraid to give it a try! If nothing else, you will learn that that particular field is not for you.

Finally, I want to share something that my sixth grade math teacher said almost every class, making sure his students would never forget. (Thanks Mr. Liner!)
